Reblogged 2.4Ghz, Detourned Surveillance

selfportrait5.jpgThe new project by RECYCLISM ™ is hitting, as many media artists are doing yet, the prosperous muse of wireless technologies. 2.4Ghz™ exploits wireless netcams populating the urban space in a very simple but interesting way. BNJMN™ GAULON (alias Benjamin Gaulon) has been riding the streets of a few European cities with a wireless video receiver, like the ones used by parents to remotely watch over their babies. His aim was to detect and record the floating video signals emitted by those network cameras like in the historical work Life’s a User’s Manual by Michelle Teran. Continue reading

Reblogged Yes, No, Maybe So

mtaa.jpgNew York-based artists MRiver and TWhid (together, they are MTAA) began their collaboration as painters, but quickly moved into the world of new media. They were among the earliest internet artists and are at the forefront of a small handful who are still in practice from that first generation. Their work continues to push the boundaries of the genre, but is consistently informed by the history of conceptual art and performance. They very often contemplate the notion of “translation” between natural and computer languages, and in the form of “updating” works (their own or others’) from the platform of one media epoch to another. While their newest piece, YES & NO (2008), grows very clearly out of this trajectory, it is refreshingly different. Like their One Year Performance Video (2004) and Karaoke DeathMatch 100 (2007), it uses software to string together pre-existing video clips of the two artists, but in a seemingly more random way than before. Live Stage: Mouchette, Staffan & Ayumi [nl Amsterdam]

31983-480-360.jpgBeauty Parlour #07: Swap, Use & Abuse Your IdentityMouchette, Staffan & Ayumi :: February 28, 2008; 6:00 pm :: Mediamatic, Oosterdokskade 5, Amsterdam.

Mouchette, the online virtual character has an unusual status of existence: www.mouchette.org. She is the author and the creation at the same time, and yet through her remote internet life she remains invisible, anonymous, genderless, untouchable, neither alive or dead. The participants of her interactive website confide in her in the most intimate way, because she am an imaginary being, living in their own head. Continue reading

Taboo Theater 2.0

possibleicon3.pngTaboo Theater 2.0 by Ursula Endlicher, Ela Kagel and Anke Zimmermann :: Online participation starts NOW online :: Theater am Neumarkt, Zürich, Switzerland :: May 19-24, 2008.

Taboo Theater 2.0 is an Internet / Theater project that focuses on the question: How much taboo does art need? Historically it seems that theater has always embraced topics regarding the breaking or rethinking of ethical values in its society. What will a theater-production face when inviting a global society with diverse approaches towards art, culture, and societal habits, to participate in it? Continue reading

State of Art – A Conversation with G.H. Hovagimyan

gh_portrait_03.gifState of Art – A Conversation Between G.H. Hovagimyan and Mark Cooley, conducted through electronic mail – January 2008.

MC: Over the years, you’ve had experiences with various authorities that have tried in one way or another to censor your work. I’m interested if you could identify and comment on particular sites of censorship that exist in and around Art institutions and identify some the taboos that tend to generate negative responses from potential censors (curators, board members, sponsors, politicians, and other interested parties). Live Stage: InterSECT [us NYC]

portrait2.jpgInterSECTAngie Eng, Zeena Parkins, and Kyoko Kitamura :: February 28, 2008; 8:30 pm :: Roulette, 20 Greene Street in SoHo, New York.

Suffering from video block, I realized we get to make the rules as we go. Who says we have to finish the script first! In the middle of editing this project … which started out as a video HD short … I missed the magic of accidents and spontaneity in making cinema in reel time. Hence…” – Angie Eng

Video, installation, and time-based performance artist Angie Eng presents InterSECT, a digital live mix of a cinepoem originally produced as a video short (Play Here / Schpilin Aqui) with a Voom HD Labs Residency in 2006. With live electric harp and electronics by Zeena Parkins and narration by Kyoko Kitamura, InterSect explores the collision of 2 traditional worlds (Hassidim and the Puerto Ricans) in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Merging Spaces: Digital Information Architecture to Narrative Imagination

anders.jpg“…Cyberspace is the illusion of space, or the inferred space that we get when we use electronic communications equipment. I’m talking to you right now, but I’m talking to your listeners as well, and in their mind, they can imagine the two of us being in this studio. There’s a kind of space that happens there as an illusion, but there’s also the compression of space and time as they’re receiving this information at a later date than it was actually recorded. So these kind of manipulations of conceptual space are actually a byproduct of electronic media, and we didn’t get that quite so obviously in previous media. Continue reading
