New Tendencies [de Karlsruhe]

opart.jpgbit international. [Nove] tendencije: Computer and Visual Research. Zagreb 1961–1973 :: February 23, 2008 - February 22, 2009 :: ZKM | Media Museum :: Opening: February 22, 7 pm :: ZKM_Foyer.

The history of computer-based arts has not yet been adequately described, and is only rarely reflected on in conjunction with the other arts. This area of the arts is hereby denied the development of a diverse discourse and the generation of a competent and critical audience, which is a basic condition for other media, i.e., painting, sculpture, and even film and video. In a series of exhibitions, the ZKM has taken on this task, for example, with Algorithmischen Revolution. In the exhibition bit international. [Nove] tendencije: Computer and Visual Research. Zagreb 1961-1973, the ZKM | Karlsruhe turns its attention to one of the most important artistic movements of the 1960s, which was of enormous influence in its day, but has sunk into near oblivion today: New Tendencies. Our Literal Speed: Performative Discourse [de Karlsruhe]

benjaminljubljana.jpgOur Literal Speed: Performative Discourse - Conference: February 29 - March 2, 2008 :: ZKM_Lecture hall and ZKM_Media Theater :: Exhibition: February 29 - May 25, 2008 :: ZKM | Media Museum, Atrium 8 :: Opening: February 29, 6 pm :: ZKM | Foyer.

Our Literal Speed manifests the imperatives that materialize the theoretical and the pedagogical. No longer can we interpret forms of academic and artistic professionalism as neutral, abstract backgrounds to the aesthetic and performative. These activities have produced their own distinctive surfaces and materials: the aesthetic has become discursive and discourse has become aesthetic. Continue reading

Reblogged The Owl Project

owl.jpgThe Owl Project explores technologies to augment our understanding of bird populations in order to allow these populations to speak to us about their habitat. In particular, in a collaboration between the MIT Media Laboratory and Maine Audubon, we use cellular technology to augment the process by which volunteers collect information for an annual owl survey in Maine. The core methodology was developed in a regional pilot census of Connecticut’s owl population in the summer of 2006, demonstrating that the audio quality of cell phones is sufficient for the discovery and interaction with owls.
