ABOUT THE PROJECT

MARK-IT is an App-based participatory public art project that invites New Yorkers to join a communal art-making experience. Using our movements in the 5 boroughs, we will create together a virtual drawing at the scale of the city.

Participants download the app on their phone, select a color and start making art! During the month of May, our daily voyages in New York’s urban landscape will be drawn on a virtual white canvas, forming an evolving, organic matrix of lines over lines. The living and breathing artwork in the making will be visible in real-time online. At the end of the project, we will receive a numbered edition of the final drawing as co-creator of the artwork.

The project questions the impact of new technologies on our freedom. MARK-IT invites visitors to make the conscious decision to participate in this common practice of acquiescence of private information and in doing so empowers them again. The banal exchange of private information in this case, provides a public service: public art.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos is a New York-based self-taught artist. She was born in Greece and raised in France. Influenced by her multicultural background, her work is driven by the desire to locate herself and trace the boundaries of her persona — both physical and virtual. She uses whimsical imagery to engage the audience in a dialogue about how identity is created and restricted by the limitations of the body. Her work has been shown internationally in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Canada.
